I don’t normally blog on the weekend, but I felt inspired, so here I am.
In our household, we have books. A bookshelf that filled up a couple weeks after we received it (as a Christmas gift), a pile stacked next to the bookshelf, a pile on Josh’s nightstand, a pile on my nightstand as well as on the floor next to my side of the bed. We also have books on end tables in the living room, on the microwave cart in the kitchen, and we also have books in the bathroom. Everywhere you look, you will find a book in this apartment-I’m sure of it.
If you added up how much money we spent on these books buying them from a department store, it would be a whole lotta dough. Some of our books were gifts received from friends or family at holidays, or we purchased them at discounted rates (usually from WalMart) or we bought them from Amazon.ca. A small portion of our books were bought at a quaint used book store in town.
We like books. I like them moreso than Josh does, but still. We like books.
Sometimes I buy them on a whim. I’ll be at a thrift store and wander to the used books section, see something that catches my eye, and buy it. Those are usually the cheapest places to buy books around here, at thrift stores, and the prices vary from $.50-$3.00. I buy so many books when I’m on a reading kick, and they are placed in a pile on or near my bookshelf until I can read my way to them.
Right now, these are the books that I have on queue to read.
- The Lucky One-Nicholas Sparks
- Shopaholic & Sister-Sophie Kinsella
- Salem Falls-Jodi Picoult
- Little Earthquakes-Jennifer Weiner
- 3 Willows-Ann Brashares
- The Guy Not Taken-Jennifer Weiner
- Goodnight Nobody-Jennifer Weiner
- Honeymoon-James Patterson
Right now I’m reading The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult, though I admit, not very quickly. I pick it up and read a few pages here and there. When it comes to certain authors, if the book is on sale or in a bin of used books, I will buy it. Hence all of the Jennifer Weiner books.
I am forever looking at books, for books, through books. I like to see and know what other people are reading and what they think of it. I love to know what’s new and what’s hot and what’s worth splurging for, even though I never splurge on a hardcover new release of any books no matter how much I like an author. I love paperbacks, and if it’s an author I love, I will buy new from Amazon (because it’s so much cheaper than our local bookstore) but I do like to buy used books in decent condition, too.
I love the idea of only buying second hand books. But honestly, I think that would be a big challenge for me. That might be an idea for a challenge in the new year, we’ll see. I may come to my senses and ask myself ‘Who am I kidding?!’ and continue my quest for cheap books that are gooooooood.
